What is the Role of an IRA Custodian?
IRA Custodians are required to legally hold title to your Individual Retirement Account and any assets inside of your IRA. They provide your statements, process your wires, distributions, etc and file the required IRS documents such as 5498's and 1099's. The IRA Custodians do not receive online statements from the investment managers. However, they will send a letter and a valuation form requesting the client to provide a fair market value as of December 31st of each year. It is incumbent upon the client to provide the IRA Custodian with year end values which are then reported on 5498's sent to the Internal Revenue Service by May 31st. Without these values, the IRA Custodian will use the current values shown on your account.
